Webinar series on : Ensuring Decent Work and Green Technology in India's Brick Kilns: Issues and Challenges

Since 2016, CEC and its partners have been working in the brick kiln sector to promote
decent work and green brick production in India’s brick kilns, in partnership with CSOs,
owners, labour collectives, authorities and other stakeholders. The present webinar series
seeks to take stock of the impact of Covid-19 on the brick kiln workers, owners and the
industry as a whole
and develop strategies to address the novel challenges posed by the
pandemic in the path of ensuring sustainable promotion of decent work and green technology
conversion in the sector. The three webinars will cover the following thematic areas.


Webinar 1: Decent Work for Brick Kiln workers in the context of Covid-19
impact

The webinar will discuss the impact of the pandemic on the wages, regularity of payment and access
to protective measures of the brick kiln workers. It will also discuss the pandemic induced distress
migration and explore the lessons that can be learnt from it for the future. The webinar will also
discuss how the pandemic influenced the processes of sourcing and deployment of labour in the brick
kilns, and analyse impact of such migration in the labour relations in brick kiln sector.


Webinar 2: Leveraging Green Initiatives for Green Brick Kilns in India
This webinar will take stock of the changing policy frameworks, avenues of financial and other
support for green conversion and explore collaborative approaches and models for promotion of green
bricks. While the Covid19 induced crisis will be the immediate background of the webinar, it will
also take a long term perspective on the potentials and challenges of leveraging latest green initiatives
for promotion of green brick production in the country.


Webinar 3: Exploring Recovery Strategies for the Brick Kiln sector, in the
context of Covid-19 Impact

The third webinar will examine the structural, organisational and policy level changes being
advocated to assist the brick kiln sector to remain productive in this time of pandemic. While taking
stock of the impact of Covid19 on the organisation of brick production, supply of raw materials &
fuel, transportation, price and market for bricks, the webinar will also discuss about suitable recovery
strategies, in consultation with brick kiln owners, industry associations, labour collectives, CSOs, and
authorities.
