The Department of Communication and Information Systems plays a key role in integrating and streamlining various functions of ‘Communication and Publication’, ‘System Management and Websites’, ‘Documentation and Information Services’. It document and disseminate information on labour, provides Labour News in our websites, maintain library, media-liaisoning, edits various research reports and campaign documents and deals specifically within the gamut of information technology for the organisation.

Documentation and Information Services

The Programme Centre Documentation and Information Services(DIS) is an integral part of CEC. The thrust of the DIS in CEC is to provide information on all labour related issues with specific focus on unorganised labour. This Centre emerged in 1988 to provide support to people's movements. Later in 1994, when it was decided to develop CEC as a Labour Resource Centre the documentation work was reorganised for the purpose of strengthening research and campaign components on labour. It collects information from primary and secondary sources, subscribes 15 national / regional newspapers, 30 leading journals, various occasional publications and other different primary documents. The Centre updates its stock of books, documents, journals, newspaper clippings and publications on regular basis. Apart from labour related issues, DIS also provides valuable information on economy, industry, Occupational safety and health, trade and environment. At present the database contains more than 92367 records. It includes:

 

Communication and Publication

The Department institutionalises knowledge and experiences generated by various Programme Centres at CEC and aims at making the reports and documents available in a systematised manner of publication to all those interested in the fields of labour. It largely caters to trade unionists/workers, academicians, activists, policy-makers, governmental and other institutions. Editorial work for campaign materials, research reports etc are also conducted apart from ‘media-liaisoning’ that includes developing campaign materials, press releases, organising press meets etc.

 

System Management and Websites

Proper and timely management of computer systems in CEC is the core responsibility of this Programme Centre. The profile of the Centre mainly includes server installation, workgroup machines and its security maintenance, network administration in LAN/Wireless Network, maintenance of resource like printers and scanners, backups of documents etc. Installation of Antivirus/Antispam Programmes, configuration and maintenance of mailing system in CEC, internet availability to desktops and laptops apart from day to day technical assistance within the organisation. Development of customised software programmes, support to earlier programmes, Inventory Monitoring system, DIS and other packages along with coordination with external agencies, creation and management of websites are some of the responsibilities of this programme centre.
